Welcome to Arbourdale's Sphere Launcher Contest!
Arbourdale Wants Your Help!
Our pond maintenance team is looking for an AquaSphere Launcher - something that can help us distribute AquaSpheres into ponds quickly, easily, and efficiently.
Have an interest in engineering? Looking for a new DIY project? Want to take part in a fun thought experiment?
Or do you just want the chance to win $1,000?
If any of that sounds like you, maybe you can help us!

Here's How the Contest Works...
Step 1: Design a Launcher
We want you to design a device for launching or throwing our AquaSpheres into ponds intact. The exact design of the device is up to you; it can be a trebuchet, a catapult, a crossbow-looking contraption, or whatever else you can imagine!
Whether your design is made in Microsoft Paint, drawn on a napkin, or modelled in a professional software, it's up to you! just make sure the design is detailed, easy to read, and submitted in an image file or PDF format.
Aquasphere specs;
- Weight = 1.8lbs / 0.8kg
- Diameter = ~6.5in / 16.5cm
Please note - we do have some important criteria for all design submissions:
- No motors/engines of any kind
- No fuels or flammable materials
- No explosive materials or munitions
- No disposable/single-use parts
- Designs must be portable, mobile, or easy to carry
We also have a target distance range for you to meet;
Your Launcher should be able to throw it further than we can, so aim for a minimum distance of 50 feet (15 meters). However, try not to exceed a maximum launch distance of 200 feet (60 meters) - we're not looking for artillery.
Remember - you don't have to be a professional engineer or mechanic to create a winning design, but your submission should be detailed enough that someone of average intelligence (us) could build it based on your specfications!
Step 2: Submit Your Design
Once you have a design put together, email your submissions to:
[email protected] BEFORE Feb. 28, 2025
Our team will spend the Winter examining your designs and picking our favourites.
The Top 5 will be awarded $1,000!
Designs with similar constructions or features will be sorted together into categories and will compete with each other to be the best in their class. For example; if multiple people submit catapult-based designs, only one catapult will be selected as a winner.
So, if you want to increase your odds of winning, be original & get creative!
Remember - The first 200 submissions will receive a free piece of Arbourdale merch, whether you win or lose!
Step 3: Build Your Design (Optional)
Designers selected to receive Top 5 honours and a $1,000 prize will be encouraged to build their Aquasphere Launchers and prepare them for a live test!
In the Spring of 2025, the Top 5 will be invited to visit Arbourdale for an in-person event in southern Ontario where we'll give each winner a shot at proving the capabilities of their Launcher.
Whichever launcher performs best and meets all of our criteria will be crowned the winner & will have their design used by us as Arbourdale's official AquaSphere Launcher!
Placed in the Top 5 but don't want to use your time and money to build your design yourself? No Problem! We'll build it and test it on your behalf so that your Launcher gets a fair shot at the 1st Place honours!

The Fine Print
I know, this part is no fun for anybody. But, in the interest of protecting us and yourself from getting hurt (physically or emotionally), we gotta do it. Sorry in advance.
Arbourdale does not assume any liability for any physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, or financial damages taken on by contest entrants in the process of designing, building, or testing their Launchers. All contest entrants are responsible for their own well-being at each step in the process of the contest. If parental supervision is required, entrants are responsible for procuring their own suitable adult. I'm not your dad.
Arbourdale does not assume any responsibility for missing or lost design submissions due to technical issues, email systems failures, typos, or miscommunication. All contest entrants are solely responsible for ensuring the delivery of their design submissions to the correct email address, so use spellcheck if you need it. The first 200 entrants will be responded to directly via email in order to confirm both design submission and shipping address details for their Arbourdale merchandise. Arbourdale does not assume any responsibility for lost merchandise due to postal service disruptions, package misplacement, invalid/improper shipping information, porch pirates, or other shipping issues. In the event of lost or misplaced merchandise, Arbourdale does not guarantee that replacement or supplementary merchandise will be provided, as we don't have room in our warehouse for that many spare pens and t-shirts.
Contest entrants selected for the top 5 will receive direct notice of their success and will be contacted to confirm details for receiving the $1,000 prize payout. Keep in mind that the Canadian dollar is especially weak at the time of writing, so you get what you get. Arbourdale is not responsible for failure to receive payment due to technical issues, improper payment routing details, or disputes with the recipients' bank. Furthermore, winners invited to participate in the live prototype testing in Spring 2025 will be responsible for providing their own transportation for themselves and their Launchers, because we don't own a private jet (yet). Location confirmation will be provided to winners in advance in order to allow entrants to make arrangements and reservations, if required. Hotel accommodations for winners will be provided. We'd love to host winners at our headquarters, but our office doesn't have much floor space for air mattresses and Alex is already sleeping in the boardroom because he got into a fistfight with his landlord.
If a winning design is submitted by a team of people, one individual from the team must be designated as the "team representative" to travel to the prototype testing. The team representative will also be responsible for receiving and distributing prize money to other members of the winning team. We can't host a whole team and give $1,000 to each team member, even though our marketing department really wants the budget to do something like that.
All Launcher design submissions received throughout the duration of the contest become the sole intellectual property of Arbourdale. Arbourdale maintains the right to own, build, replicate, copy, sell, and profit off of your labour, because that's how capitalism works.
Design submission deadline is set firmly at Feb. 28, 2025. No exceptions will be made. If that's not enough advance notice for you, maybe consider working on your time management skills.
Any contest entrants with further concerns are encouraged to contact Arbourdale staff by emailing "[email protected]" for clarification. We promise to try our hardest not to make you feel dumb for asking questions.
